根据句子中主谓结构的套数（一套、两套或多套）和各套主谓结构之间的关系，英语句子可分为简单句、并列句和主从句。

1. 简单句：只含有一套主谓结构。

2. 并列句：由两套或两套以上并列的主谓结构组成的句子。

3. 主从句：含有两套或两套以上主谓结构，其中一套为主句，其余为从句，在语法上作为主句的一个成分。

4. 并列主从复合句：并列句与主从句的复合结构，即其中的两大部分是并列的，而一个或每个并列分句又是一个主从句。这种结构实际上仍属于主从复合句。

GMAT语法考试以主从句和并列句为主，并从语义上考查上述各句子内部的逻辑关系，尤其是不同的逻辑关系不能相互颠倒、混淆或随意改变：

简单句表达主次关系：主谓语表达核心意思，修饰词或修饰短语表达次要意思。并列句表达并列关系：并列的主谓结构强调两个或两个以上的核心意思同等重要。主从句表达主从关系：主句表达主要意思，从句表达从属意思。
