不知道从什么时候开始,咱们的微信上特别流行一种东西,叫做表情包,而最近特别火的表情包里,有一句话特别有名那就是:你长得那么好看,说什么都对。

我们常常认为,我们对一个观点的接受,常常是先了解这种观点是怎么来的,然后经过我们的思考分析这些理由,然后才最终的接受这样的一个观点。但是,如果我们反思自己的日常生活,我们却发现,时常有的时候我们被说服,并不是因为我们真的理性的考虑了原因,而是简简单单的,我们想要去相信这样一个观点,于是我们在已经相信这个观点是真实可靠的前提下再去为这样的一个观点来寻找理由,这其实也是一种说服人的办法,在亚里士多德老先生的修辞学中,这种说服策略被称为appealing to pathos(情感诉诸)。

其实类似的情况在我们的生活中屡见不鲜:长的好看的推销员的销售量会更大,我们喜欢的明星就算犯傻我们也会喜欢,一个人其貌不扬工作晋升等等其实都会收到影响。很多时候我们的情绪和看法在不自觉中会影响我们对客观事物的判断,而这样的一种策略其实在我们新SAT的写作过程中是屡见不鲜。

就以大家非常非常熟悉的Let There Be Dark 这样一篇文章为例。文章在一开始的位置,莫名的就开始用诗歌一样的语言为大家描绘了一副美妙的夜空形象——“meteors left smoky trails across sugary spreads of stars”。让读者们在读到这里的时候对夜空和黑暗就产生出了向往和欣赏的情绪,也联想到了夜空的美和浪漫的情绪。其中很多词的使用,例如sugary,也很好的引导读者将星星和读者心中喜爱的情绪(甜),相互联系起来,进一步加深了读者心中对夜空的美的印象。而在后文中又突然将这样的一种情绪猝不及防的将其打破,从而让读者产生出一种类似观看悲剧时候的情绪,觉得可惜,这种强烈的情感会为整个文章打下一个基调,让读者带着一种希望保护黑夜的情绪再在后文的说理过程中为自己的观念找到证据,从而完成文章整体的说服任务。

同样的情况下其实也出现在Dr. Martin Luther King的演讲之中,在演讲的中段,Dr. King在描述了自己在努力在黑人区中如何努力说服这些年轻人放弃用暴力来解决问题,尽量帮助美国降低遭受暴乱的可能(文中出现的莫洛托夫鸡尾酒是一种非常有代表意义的平民暴乱的武器,有兴趣的同学可以查找一下),同时画风一转,这些年轻人反问为什么我们的国家还在用暴力作为解决问题的办法。听众听到这里,很多时候都会觉得不寒而栗,进而将这种不安投射到他们的思想上来反对国家发动的越南战争,用这种方式将战争和个人的日常生活非常紧密的联系在了一起。如果不是这样来做的话,很多听众可能也很难非常确实的感受到战争带来的直接影响。也是非常出色的情感说服的手段。

在我们SAT写作的分析部分之中,对情感说服的考察是一个非常重要,同时也是我们时常会忽略的部分,这部分内容的设计,其实也是需要我们的同学们能够在形成观点的时候,考虑到自己的一部分主观因素的影响,从而更好的分辨自己观念的合理性。在应考方面,情感说服的手段通常都跟我们文章具体的修辞手法,选词(sugary),组织结构中的对比和排比,证据中出现的个人经验等等部分相互出现,尤其是在演讲类的文章里,分析过程中要着重注意这种情感说服的方式。

如何写好一篇新SAT写作文章?

美国时间3月5日,改革后的新SAT在美国举行了首考,纽约考区这次考试写作部分选取的文章是E.J. Dionne Jr.2003年7月3日发表在The Washington Post(华盛顿邮报)上的名为A call for national service的一篇文章,在文章中,作者呼吁了年轻人应该关注社会服务。

文章全文748词,符合官方指南上面文章词数在650-750词之间的要求。在考试时,同学们打开写作试题册之后应该先去看第二个方框去找到作者整篇文章的中心观点,在课程中我们说过,作者的观点一般位于第二个方框第二行persuade his/her audience that后面。接下来同学们就可以带着作者的观点去阅读文章,分析作者具体是通过什么论证手段及论证手法来支撑自己的观点的。在阅读文章的时候,同学们重点去寻找每个段落中可能存在的作者使用的分析性元素,并且在旁边的空白处做好标注,方便后面的写作(标注该元素具体是什么,以及简单标注其作用)。

在课程中我们提到过引用(quotation)的作用,在议论文写作中,作者除了使用例子,还会引用一些权威机构或专家学者的观点来支撑自己的中心论点。Quotation(引言)一般以两种形式呈现:直接引用(direct quotation)和间接引用(indirect quotation)。直接引用(direct quotation)比较好识别,作者将原语言放在引号中直接写在自己的文章里;间接引用(indirect quotation)中没有引号的出现,作者使用自己的语言去转述原有的信息内容。作者通过使用引言可以增加自己观点的真实性和有效性(enhance the authenticity of what they are trying to stress)。作者在开头两段通过引用Declaration of Independence的句子来提出自己的观点:人与人之间不是彼此孤立的,认识彼此尊重的(“pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor”)。在第九自然段和第十自然段作者引用了McChrystal的话再次强调了自己的观点,并且指出universal service as transformative。

需要同学们注意的是,文章中的所有分析性元素没有必要全部都写出来同学们只需要找出最明显最有说服力并且在考场上能够进行详细分析的元素进行写作。这样就构成了中间段落的写作。对于文章论证元素的分析,一般建议同学们至少写出三个步骤:

(1)识别(指出作者在这里使用的是具体的某种证据形式、论证手法或修辞手段等,可以写成The author uses/adopts/utilizes/employs 具体的元素 to support/buttress/back up/emphasize his argument/claim.)

(2)内容(通过quote,paraphrase或summarize等形式指出作者呈现的内容是什么,这一点与reading的分数相关)

(3)分析(一般先分析作者为什么这样写,也就是作者使用这样的元素目的是什么,再指出这样写带来的效果是什么)。

对于开头段和结尾段的写作比较简单,我们可以指出可以指出作者在文章中使用了什么样的分析性元素,表达了
